King Island Environment
The joint venture partners are committed to developing the King Island project in a way that has the least impact on the environment.
During the process of developing the Development Proposal and Environmental Management Plan (DPEMP) KIS undertook a significant number of studies and made a number of voluntary commitments to environmental best practice.
The DPEMP was released for public comment in 2006, and subsequently a supplement was distributed following a consultation process with stakeholder groups. This was approved by the Tasmanian Government, and ultimately incorporated into the Development Approval issued by the King Island Council.
There are numerous items which are comprehensively covered in the environmental management plan. Many of these relate to fauna and flora protection, water management, dust and noise emissions, pit dewatering quality, and cultural heritage items.
In addition, the joint venture holds approvals from the Australian Federal Government to reclaim land in Grassy Bay, using overburden from the mining operations.
The joint venture is committed to meeting all of the commitments that it has made under the DPEMP and other documents and licences.
